  11. wrong file somehow (maybe you just think you are).

  21. You're busy, so let's get down to business.  
  22.  
  23. WHAT GLOBAL ABBREVIATIONS DOES FOR YOU:
  24.  
  25. Global Abbreviations has only one purpose-- 
  26. to SAVE YOU TIME!  You save time by typing less,
  27. and you save time by not having to jump around 
  28. in different windows to find things or do 
  29. things.
  30.  
  31. It's a very simple concept.  You can abbreviate 
  32. words, or sentences, or commands, or many other 
  33. things.  Then, you can ALWAYS have INSTANT 
  34. ACCESS to them from ANYWHERE in Windows!  
  35. You've probably used macro facilities in word 
  36. processors or spread sheets.  They can be big 
  37. time savers.  But, they only work in that one 
  38. application.
  39.  
  40. Global Abbreviations gives you that 
  41. functionality and MUCH MORE in EVERY 
  42. APPLICATION.  And it works EXACTLY the same 
  43. whether you are working in a spread sheet or 
  44. a word processor or a data base or ANYWHERE!
  45.  
  46. Let's try it right here in the Windows 
  47. Notepad.exe application.  You probably use 
  48. this Windows program for fast editing jobs.
  49. It's the same program, but now, Global 
  50. Abbreviations is listening in to help you.
  51.  
  52. Try the examples below.  This assumes that 
  53. Global Abbreviations is ON (green "GA" icon).
  54.  
  55. Don't worry about changing this file, 
  56. it's a copy.
  57.  
  58. Whenever you see, "F8" in the instructions, 
  59. press the F8 function key.
  60.  
  61. You should change the Hot Key assignments 
  62. later. See "Help- International" for details.

  64. TRY IT RIGHT HERE!  Put your cursor in the 
  65. empty line below, and type a couple of spaces 
  66. followed by: " wow F8" (without the quotes!)
  67.

  70. If you typed it as shown, you should have seen 
  71. the "wow" replaced with "This program can save 
  72. me lots of time!"  Now just realize that you 
  73. can define any abbreviation to be whatever you 
  74. want!  Note-- this Quick Tour assumes that the 
  75. sample set of abbreviations is active and that
  76. Global Abbreviations is running (green icon).
  77.  
  78. A brief note before we continue.  All 
  79. abbreviations must be delimited (separated 
  80. from other words) by a Space or a Carriage 
  81. Return (Enter key).  SO START EACH EXAMPLE 
  82. BY TYPING A SPACE!

  84. Try This One!-> in the line below type: 
  85. " ssi F8" (without the quotes!)

  90. But what if you have several abbreviations 
  91. that all start the same?  (note: this is 
  92. common for programmers when several variables 
  93. or constants start with the same few letters.)
  94. No problem, if you aren't happy the first time,
  95. Global Abbreviations will keep trying, 
  96. circling through all possible matches.  
  97. You simply keep hitting the same hot key 
  98. again and again.  To see this, 
  99. Type:  " g F8 F8 F8 F8 F8" (w/o quotes)

  103. Now you begin to see how easy this can make 
  104. typing things that you can't exactly remember, 
  105. without having to leave where you are and go 
  106. look them up someplace else!!  
  107. Reminder-> Start with a SPACE or the ENTER key!
  108. Easy isn't it?  Now try this one: 
  109. " 1234 F8" (w/o quotes )

  113. This will only be of use if you happen to need
  114. them spelled in English!    
  115.  
  116. Remember, you could be doing this in any 
  117. Windows application.  You could move to 
  118. another Editor or WordProcessor or Programming
  119. Environment or DataBase or ANYWHERE.  Now you 
  120. can have some consistency, no matter where 
  121. you are!

  123. Ok, here's another one that will come in handy 
  124. once in awhile.  Type in: " (34 * tan 30) F2" 
  125. (without the quotes, Note the F2 now)

  129. This example shows two things.  One is the 
  130. FULL EXPRESSION EVALUATOR.  And the other is 
  131. the use of The Append Hot Key instead of 
  132. The Replace Hot Key.  Your results should 
  133. have looked like this:  
  134. (34 * tan 30) = -217.781260685974
  135.  
  136. Now try this: " ;today F8" (remember the SPACE)
  137.

  140. You should have seen today's date returned.  
  141. When I do it I get Saturday, December 18, 1993.
  142. Abbreviations that begin with a semi-colon 
  143. are special commands or ;Macros to Global 
  144. Abbreviations, see Help for details.

  146. Ok, another feature you'll come to rely on.  
  147. This is the program launcher.  It is going to 
  148. call up the Windows File Manager.  After you 
  149. do it, just close (or minimize) the File Manager
  150. and come back here.

  152. Type this: " :fm F8" (w/o quotes)

  156. Welcome back!  You can use Global Abbreviations
  157. to launch any windows app you want.  
  158. " :fm" is just an example built into the 
  159. sample abbreviations list that launches File
  160. Manager.  Remembering abbreviations is MUCH 
  161. EASIER than trying to remember separate hot 
  162. keys assigned to each app!  Abbreviations that 
  163. begin with a colon (:) are used to launch other 
  164. programs.  They can also be used to put bitmaps
  165. or text files onto the clipboard so you can 
  166. immediately paste them into the application 
  167. you are using.  See Help for details.

  178. Now, the only thing left is to find out how to 
  179. enter your own abbreviations.  There are LOTS 
  180. of ways.  One we can sample from right here.  
  181. The Immediate Hot Key is especially useful for 
  182. programmers and others who type in 
  183. LongSingleWordsWithoutASpace.  You can teach
  184. these to Global Abbreviations on the fly!!!  
  185.     Remember: (w/o quotes and note the F7)
  186. Try this:   " ThisIsALongWord F7"

  190. You should have had a little message flashed 
  191. back saying " ADDED-> This ThisIsALongWord"  
  192. Well let's see if it did.
  193. Now type:
  194. " thi F8" (without the quotes!)

  198. and you should see: ThisIsALongWord

  200. This is just a fast way to put in single 
  201. abbreviations without having to slow down what 
  202. you're doing at the time.  The Editor and 
  203. Importer will give you powerful ways to build 
  204. sets of abbreviations from your existing 
  205. documents and Visual Basic Ascii files.
  206.  
  207. This brings us to the end of the quick tour.
  208. (Reminder- this is a temp file you are in so
  209. don't worry about saving it when you close 
  210. notepad.)

  212. You should go to the Editor now to explore 
  213. some more.

  215. The last of the four Hot Keys can be helpful 
  216. here.  All it does is popup the Global 
  217. Abbreviations Edit Window.  
  218. Type "F4" (w/o quotes) and you'll be there.
